UNC path vs mapped drive letter

Bit of a random question for today. Is there a difference, speed or otherwise, in opening files through a mapped drive letter compared to a UNC path?

When I work on a web project I open the files in  NetBeans through a UNC path. The files are on a Linux server on my local network. It’s always worked fine so I’ve never questioned it.

A couple weeks ago though the NetBeans 7 upgrade got me thinking about it. The reason I upgraded to NB7 is that it has built in support for phpDoc. I’ve always used that type of commenting, but having the ability to build the documentation from within NB was a big plus. (Finally having wordwrap is a big plus too.) But I noticed that I couldn’t build the documentation when I opened a project through UNC, but it worked through a mapped drive letter.

So, is there any difference? And, if so, is it something noticeable day-to-day? For now I’ve just mapped my w:\ to the UNC path and it seems to be working fine.
