IM Preferred over E-mail

Instant messaging is becoming more popular than email among teenagers, a new study finds.

66% of users 13 to 21-years-old set more IMs than emails according to an instant messaging study commissioned by America Online. This is up from the 49% statistic from last year.

More statistics from the study:

  • 38% send as many or more IMs compared to emails
  • 25% of users would like to see entertainment content within the IMs
  • 33% send IMs from their cell phones
  • 12% would like to see VoIP combined with IM to replace their home phone service
  • About 80,000,000 users reguarly use IM
  • 13% have their IM handle printed on their business cards
