13 million downloads for FireFox since November

Open-source FireFox is putting pressure on Microsoft’s dominance of the browser market with over 13 million downloads since November. A companion email program, Thunderbird, was released earlier this month.

FireFox has announced that they are after a 10 percent market share by the end of 2005.

Consumers are taking up the cause more quickly than corporations. Of course, it’s much easier to upgrade one computer sitting on your desk than thousands around a major company.

One of the biggest reasons for FireFox’s success is that it is not as exploited as Internet Explorer. Most security experts feel that this is a temporary benefit. Those that write viruses and the like tend to go after the biggest target, which currently is IE. As FireFox grows in popularity, it will become more of a target.
