Website Promotion Part I: Introduction

This is going to be a serial article that I wrote for a forum.

Introduction
You can have the single greatest website in the world, but if nobody finds it your site doesn’t do any good. The question is, how do people find your site.

How are sites found?
There are three basic ways that a visitor gets to your site. Search engines, links from other sites, and direct access.

Search Engines – If you’re looking for a wedding photographer in Phoenix, odds are you’ll pop onto Google and type in “Phoenix wedding photographer”. If you’re a wedding photographer in Phoenix, you’d like your site to be one of the first few that comes up. Search engine optimization is a lengthy topic by itself that will have to wait for another article. For now, we’ll just leave it as one of the ways that a site is found.

Links from other sites – Other sites include directories as well as random sites that choose to add a link. Often this is one of the best because by a site linking to you they imply a recommendation.

Direct Access – Direct access is when a visitor types your website in directly.
