Quitting Facebook?

With apologies to my online friends who post their latest random thoughts on LOL Cats, religious messages, or rantings on why or why not A&M going to the SEC was a good decision; I just deactivated my Facebook account.

Seems like it shouldn’t be that bad since I’ve never been much on Facebook anyway. Heck, I never even uploaded an avatar and haven’t ever done a status update. But even with that I still found myself deactivating my account instead of deleting it which means that I can just log back in and all of my stuff will come back.

What I realized is that even without posting anything of my own I was still wasting too much time each day on Facebook for what I was getting out of it. Wasn’t anything near what I’ve heard from other people, but wasting 15 or 20 minutes a day still adds up to a couple hours a week. And since at the end of that time I really wasn’t getting anything beneficial out of Facebook I decided time was right to leave.

So my account is inactive and the Facebook app is no longer on my Atrix. More importantly, I’ve put a to-do on Remember the Milk to go back in and actually delete my account in about a week. Hopefully that extra couple of hours next week will make the decision a bit easier second time around.

  1. It’s amazing how many times I’ve felt drawn to “just check” Facebook over the past few days. Heck, I just saw a news article about Facebook and almost typed FB in to my browser address bar out of habit before I caught myself.
