Which file system for Linux?

In case you’re like me and don’t fully understand all of the different file systems that are available for Linux Kevin Hatfield has posted an easy to follow introduction on the main file systems. In addtion to the mainline Linux file systems link EXT2 and EXT3 he also describes a few that are best for specific uses like SANs and also goes into FAT32 and NTFS for the Windows crowd.

Quick fix for stuck pixels

Posted in Computers & Internet

I’ve got a Acer 19″ LCD that’s had a pixel almost dead center show up as green a couple of times. The first time it freaked me out and I started digging for my receipt expecting that I would be sending it back in for replacement.  Didn’t find it though. After a couple of hours I got tired of looking at the green dot and touched the pixel. It got a little dimmer. So very gently I tried rubbing my monitor where the green dot was. After a couple of passes it disappeard.

I have no idea why this works, but it has worked the couple of times that the green dot has shown up. Be sure to wash your hand first though. The first time I left a nasty mark on the monitor that had to be cleaned off.

Google Webmaster Tools now show links

The Google Webmaster Tools dashboard has been expanded to show internal and external links to each page on your site and it seems to do a better job than the link: command.

When you log in to the webmaster tools you’ll see a new tab called “Links”. Click it and you’ll see a list of your pages that are linked from the outside world. Further clicking will allow you to drill down and see what pages on the internet are linking to each of your pages.
